On the surface, Hawai'i seems to be known for endless sand beaches, crystal clear water and reefs. However, if you head "mauka," or toward the mountains, you'll find an 'aina equally as inviting. In our second collaborative print with Oahu based artist Nick Kuchar, several elements synonymous to daily inland culture can be found. Lo'ulu palms sway while kalo (taro) and mai'a (banana) are farmed, with the beauty of Hawai'i's boundless waterfalls cascading in the background.
Nick Kuchar is an Oahu based artist who creates vintage inspired surf and travel art featuring his favorite locations throughout Hawai'i. His creative process takes him around the islands where he looks for inspiration paddling out at surf breaks and going on hikes.
Our peached broadcloth is a durable woven fabric that undergoes a special finishing process. Small fibers on the exterior of the fabric are brushed, creating the peached appearance and soft feel.
Our latest collaborative shirt features the plans for a Hawaiian-style surf and skate Hale Kau La'au (treehouse). Designed to look like a graphic novel but read like an instructional manual, this detailed print shows the intricate construction story from panel to panel of this epic aloha shirt.
We're no treehouse experts - lucky for us, our friends at Wooden Wave are. Matt & Roxy Ortiz are the husband and wife art duo who collaborate under the name Wooden Wave. Their playful, hand-drawn aesthetic showcases a whimsical take on draftsmanship, with treehouses being a frequently used subject matter. Born and raised in Hawai'i, Matt and Roxy have a deep appreciation for the islands and the importance of sustainability. By including components that advocate environmental awareness in their sketches, Matt & Roxy share this very important message through a unique and creative vehicle. We are honored to collaborate with them on this very special, Made in Hawaii, aloha shirt.
Our second collaborative shirt with mural artist Kamea Hadar features his artwork of goddess-like female figures. Although Kamea's work is based in traditional portraiture, it has evolved off of the canvas to large scale murals and installations that be found in cities around the world.
Kamea, who is also Co-Lead Director of POW!WOW! Hawai'i, describes his inspiration for the Goddess series as "captivating female figures symbolizing the perfect human forms we strive to be. While looking in every direction, we are surrounded by one another and also by nature. The lei po'o, or "head lei" that each figure dons is made up of native flora and represents the land it grows from. Like rain water falling from a mountain top, flowing hair cascades from underneath the lei to the top of another figure, representing the cycle of fresh water and of life."

We are proud to present "Cloudbreak," a collaborative print with the late John Severson. Known as the founder of Surfer Magazine and pioneer of surf culture, we are stoked to offer this print as one of our Collector's Edition shirts. Inspired by our iconic "silkies" from the 1930's, we partnered with the same Japanese fabric mills that produced our originals to create an exclusive rayon filament which is then cut and sewn in Hawai'i. With improved printing techniques, these shirts have the look of the original, but with an updated smooth feel.
This shirt comes with a collector's box that showcases the print through an aloha shirt window front and tells the story of Kahala on the back. Whether you keep it or gift it, this shirt is undeniably something special.
