The Inside Scoop:
Kahala x Matsumoto's Shave Ice
We are excited to share more about the inspiration and history behind our special Matsumoto’s Shave Ice aloha shirt collection
A Local Institution
Matsumoto’s Shave Ice, nestled in the heart of Hale'iwa on Oahu’s North Shore, has been a beloved institution since its establishment in 1951 by Mamoru and Helen Matsumoto. Originally a humble grocery store, the Matsumotos delivered goods on bicycles until they could afford a panel truck, gradually growing into a central stop for the community's needs.
Riding the Wave of Surfing Culture
As the surfing industry began to boom on the North Shore in the eighties, Matsumoto’s adapted by introducing shave ice to their offerings, quickly becoming a favorite among surfers and beachgoers. This pivotal move not only solidified their place in the community but also began a tradition that would span generations.
A Family Legacy
Mamoru and Helen’s youngest son, Stanley, eventually took over the business. With the help of his wife, Noriko, they transformed the grocery store into a world-famous souvenir shop, flipping over soda boxes to display their first iconic logo tees. Today, it is run by their daughter, Remy, continuing the family legacy and ensuring that Matsumoto’s remains a cornerstone of the community.
The Magic of Shave Ice
A busy day at Matsumoto’s sees over 1,000 shave ices made, with the iconic Rainbow flavor—strawberry, lemon, and pineapple—being a perennial favorite from their original menu. The vibrant colors and sweet flavors of Matsumoto’s shave ice have been beautifully captured in our prints, bringing the joy of this beloved treat to our aloha shirts.
