Ya en 1810, este tejido de algodón procedía de Tahití y dejó sus huellas en muchos artistas y en la realeza viajera. El pintor francés Paul Gauguin pintó muchas de sus piezas de estilo de vida primitivo con mujeres envueltas en pareos audaces y coloridos.
