A LOCAL LEGACY
A short five-minute drive from Kahala headquarters, Helena's Hawaiian Food has been serving its community the same menu of delicious Hawaiian-style dishes for nearly as long as we have been making aloha shirts. Established by Helen Chock in 1946, Helena's has earned numerous accolades for its timeless comfort fare, including the James Beard Award in 2000 for the Regional Classics category.
Gathering at their table has become a beloved tradition uniting locals and drawing visitors from near and far. We're honored to collaborate with Helena's to celebrate their enduring culinary legacy, paying homage to the dishes that have brought generations together over the years.

Since 1946
“My formula is just to stay the same." Craig Katsuyoshi tells us. He’s the second-generation owner of Helena's and grandson of Helen Chock. Together, they cooked until she passed in 2007, calibrating every recipe to taste like the dishes Katsuyoshi enjoyed eating as a kid growing up in the restaurant. In 2001, Helena’s relocated from North King Street to its current School Street location in Kalihi where Katsuyoshi and his family continue to uphold her legacy.
Served Family Style
Typically made to share among family and friends, these are traditional dishes at Helena’s illustrated in our limited edition cotton broadcloth aloha shirt.
Helena's menu favorites include their renowned pipikaula aged short-ribs, chicken long rice, lau lau, lomi salmon, and the chili pepper water found on every dining table. Although not pictured on the shirt, these dishes are always eaten with a starter of sweet onion slices dipped in Hawaiian salt, a big scoop of hot rice and a side of macaroni salad. Make sure you save some room for the haupia, a Hawaiian coconut pudding, to top it off.
