For nearly 90 years, Kahala has drawn inspiration from Hawai‘i’s rich culture, environment, and way of life—values deeply intertwined with the ocean. Our collaboration with Pacific Whale Foundation supports their mission to protect marine life and preserve the waters that surround our islands. With over 45 years of groundbreaking research, education, and conservation efforts based in Māʻalaea Bay, Maui, , the foundation plays a vital role in safeguarding Hawai‘i’s humpback whales and their delicate ecosystem. To further this mission, a portion of proceeds from every aloha shirt purchase goes directly back to the foundation, funding critical initiatives that ensure the ocean remains a thriving sanctuary for generations to come.

Behind the Science
To bring this story to life, we turned to those on the front lines of ocean conservation—Chief Scientist Jens Currie and Conservation Biologist Brianna Simon. Jens leads research on the impact of human activity on marine mammals, while Brianna oversees community outreach, inspiring action through education and conservation programs. Their work is essential in preserving Hawai‘i’s marine ecosystems for the future.
All imagery for this collaboration is captured by Selket Kaufman, Documentary Filmmaker and Photographer for Pacific Whale Foundation, whose lens brings the beauty and urgency of marine conservation into focus.
